Enjoy a Healthy, Happy New Year!

Tips to party and maintain a healthy weight:

1.      Exercise – Plan your New Year’s Eve around an activity such as ice skating, cross country skiing or walking around the neighborhood to see the lights.  Fort Snelling Park sets up luminaries for a night time walk on New Year’s Eve.  It is beautiful.

-        If going to a party, take time to exercise during the day.  It will raise your metabolism and will help burn calories.

2.      During the day before you party, eat fiber-rich whole grains for breakfast to keep you full throughout the day.  Have a light lunch of soup or salad, then before you leave for the party snack on yogurt and fruit.  Don’t go the party on an empty stomach!

-        Drink water throughout the day and at the party.

-        Certain aromas help curb appetites.  You can make your own flavored waters for less than 10¢.  The aroma helps you curb your appetite!

-        Cut calories in ½ by drinking a wine spritzer.  Just add sparkling water to ½ glass of wine.

3.      Don’t deny yourself your favorite dishes but eat selectively.  Fill your plate with two thirds vegetable, fruits, beans, and whole grains, and one third lean proteins.  This is a good habit throughout the year.
